Butt-Ums Up Baby: For a Stylish Change

Buttums2I'm fanatical about always being prepared for a quick change anywhere, anytime. In the car, at Grandma's house, in the family room, at the park and the mall -- wherever I go with my baby, I need a fully stocked changing kit close by! Which is why I love these compact stylish changing kits from Butt-ums Up Baby.

Cloaked in fun minky fabric and sized just right to hold your wipes and 2 to 4 diapers, these handy kits are perfect for use at home and on the go. The entire kit unrolls in a flash, one-handed. The changing surface is waterproof and generously-sized and the wipes and diapers are stored right where you need them. Near the baby's butt! The Butt-ums up Baby changing kit is small enough to fit in a large diaper bag and convenient enough to throw in or clip onto your stroller for walks to the park or traveling. The kit is machine washable, if things get messy.

Elmo's World -- Opposites: It's time for opposites day

Elmo is a HUGE hit in my house, and I've decided he's brilliantly marketed. I didn't do ANYTHING to encourage my child's early love of the furry, red character, but inevitably he became a favorite in our house. I had been using my DVR to stockpile Sesame Street episodes. Then I found the "Elmo's World" DVDs.

My daughter doesn't care too much about the other characters on the street, she knows them all and will name them, but once Elmo is off the screen she requests him to come back. "Elmo? Elmo? Elmo? ..." You get the point. Tired of fast-forwarding to the 39-minute marker in every episode (it's a sickness I tell you), I scooped up an "Elmo's World" DVD and found my solution. Packed in every "Elmo's World" DVD are three of the mini-segments, each approximately 20 minutes in length.

Elmosworldopposites New to the line is "Elmo's World: Opposites". This particular DVD features the episodes "Up and Down," "Fast and Slow," and "Open and Close." "Fast and Slow" is one of my favorites, it features the infamous Tortoise and Hare to help show Elmo the difference between fast and slow. Each "Elmo's World" episode follows the same format, and my daughter LOVES the repetition and format. She routinely asks for NooNoo (Mr. Noodle) or Fissie (Dorothy the Goldfish). I definitely limit her tv-watching and wish I could say that she never watches TV, but at least with these videos I know what she's watching and I approve! Buy your copy from amazon.com for $10!

CARES and Baby B'Air: Airplane safety for babies and toddlers

For kids 1-4 years old

Cares If your child will have their own seat, and they are over a year old, a relatively new product on the market fills a void.  CARES ("Child Aviation REStraint System") from Kids Fly Safe is a belt and buckle system that attaches to the airplane seat belt and seat. The only FAA-approved non-car seat safety restraint for all phases of flight for children over one, who weigh between 22 and 44 pounds (usually between 1-4 years) and in their own seat, it protects your precious cargo by restraining their torso to the seat and not just their waist. If you've ever had to schlep a car seat for a plane ride, you will definitely want to get CARES.

We used it when we traveled to Las Vegas and San Francisco this fall.  At first, Anya wasn't thrilled with the idea of getting strapped to the seat, but then again, she didn't exactly love having to sit in her car seat either. (She'd rather sit on our laps!) It was very easy to install- you need to ask the person sitting behind you to lower their seat tray for a minute while you put the red part of the belt around the seat back and tighten it, and then again when you have to remove it.  It doesn't affect the seat tray so they have no cause for concern.  Then you adjust the black straps- threading the plane seat belt through two loops on the bottom and adjust the height of the chest clips.  To your child, it will look and feel like their car seat.  What I love about it is how lightweight and compact it is (1 pound, fitting in a 6" bag). So even if you haven't purchased a seat for your child (if they're under 2, you aren't required to buy one), you can take this with you and cross your fingers that you'll have an empty seat next to you. In the past, we've schlepped the car seat with us and waited to board until the last minute.  Because airlines have a tendency to overbook flights, it's rare to get an adjacent empty seat but if you are really nice to the flight attendants before boarding, they will try to help you out.  Therefore, it's much easier to schlep the small CARES belt and possibly not use it instead of schlepping a carseat through the airport and end up having to gatecheck it.

It recently won one of only 8 Good Buy Awards for 2008 from the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, out of more than 2,000 products tested. Check out the January 2008 issue of Good Housekeeping on sale mid-December, where inventor Louise Stoll's products and story, will be showcased.  It's also won  the National Parenting Center 2007 Seal of Approval, Mr. Dad Seal of Approval, iParenting Media Award and The Toy Man eChoice award. Best of all, more than 15,000 CARES have been sold.

Stoll_071126x_21_c_shrp_sm Louise, a transportation-savvy, safety-conscious grandmother from Vermont, was inspired to find a hassle-free and portable solution to carting car seats on airplanes that would enable youngsters to be as safe flying as they are riding in cars. Although she had no technical engineering or design experience, Stoll knew that the weight and bulk of car seats were exactly the opposite of what was needed.  She also knew, from years of working in the U.S. Department of Transportation, that the airplane lap belt alone did not protect young children.  Her 6 year labor of love finally hit the market in 2006 after partnering with aircraft seatbelt manufacturer, AmSafe, and received FAA certification. To date, The UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore have approved CARES use in their countries. Canada is pending and the rest of the European Union is in process.

This safety device weighs just one pound, fits in a 6" sack, and will run you $74.95. Visit www.kidsflysafe.com to learn more or to order.

For infants sitting on your lap

Babybair When we flew to Amsterdam when Anya was just 4 months old, KLM provided us with a lap belt that looped through mine, but in the United States, there's nothing.  Isn't it crazy that airline flight attendants are always checking to make sure you're wearing your seat belt but the fact that your infant is just sitting on your lap doesn't bother them (or the airline or the FAA) at all?

Baby B'Air is an FAA-approved quilted cotton flight vest for your 6 month old-2 year old child.  You slip it over their head and snap the buckles firmly around their torso and crotch and then feed your belt through the loop that attaches to the back of the vest.  This tethers your child to you so if there's turbulence, if your arms loosen.  For some reason, it's not approved for taxiing, takeoff and landing, but the rest of the flight is where there's greatest chance for turbulence. Available for $29.95 at OneStepAhead.com and other sites and stores.

Four Peas: Now with messenger and lunch bags!

RockermessbagLast Spring I wrote about how much I love the backpacks from Four Peas.  The two toddler backpacks we own have been with us back and forth from grandma's house everyday and through two European vacations and still look great. I recommend these backpacks to everyone and am already planning on getting a school book sized one for when pre-school starts. Now Four Peas has come out with a great line of  messenger and lunch bags.

The messenger bags are kid-friendly in many ways but even parents and older children will love them. The bags are 14x12 and can expand up to five inches when full (though they are two inches deep when flat) so you can actually get good use out of them.  They also close with kid-friendly Velcro pieces and have four snaps on the strap so that they can be snapped onto the handlebars of a bike or onto a stroller.

Funkymonkeylunchbag_2_2 The lunch bags (my personal favorite) are a nice 7x7 square shape (big enough to fit Catie's straw cups) and have an interior mesh pocket to hold items securely.  The insulated bags also have a zipper closure around three sides of the bag to help you fill (and empty!) them easily.

Both the messenger and lunch bags come in the same great designs that you are used to seeing from Four Peas bags and you can actually buy them all as a set or individually...but really, just buy the set because what is cuter than a kid with a matching backpack and lunch bag?! These sets would actually make a really great holiday gift.

Four Peas: Activity and Backpacks

Polka_dot My daughter went through this stage when she was just short of a year where she would stuff all her toys in a little backpack and spend hours just emptying the bag and filling it back up again.  As a parent, this was a wonderful stage to live through because it meant we could take her to parties without any worries since we knew that if we sat her down with her book-bag in hand she'd have a blast!  As a result, I have a soft-spot for child-sized backpacks and the Four Peas Backpacks are, without a doubt, my favorites.

I love these backpacks so much that I actually own two of them. One of them (the Later Gater) goes to grandma's house everyday, and traveled to Europe with us last year, and it has stood the wear and tear of a year's use with zero problems. Our newest one (the Polka Dots) gets used on the weekends and now that Catie is old-enough to actually wear it on her back, it gets followed by lots of compliments.

The two backpacks we own are toddler sized but we will definitely be getting a school book sized one when the time comes. Not only are these packs sturdy but the prints are also adorable. I love the Girly Camo one!

Also totally brilliant and from the same company are the Kids Activity Packs. It was all I could do to keep it away from my daughter once she discovered there were dress-me-up stickers in there.  I am saving it for a rainy day -- namely our six hour flight to Europe this summer!  Filled with activities that kids can't resists (stickers, crayons, a doodle pad, toys, a deck of cards with instructions for a game and more) the Activity Pack is a MUST if you are planning a trip away with your child.

I highly recommend both these items. Check out the selection at www.fourpeasonline.com.
