Bingo Records: Music you'll recognize that you'll kids will love

Frontcovers_motown Often when we're trying to find music to listen to us parents will find ourselves giving into another Raffi cd in exchange for not having to hear our toddlers saying they don't like the music on player. At Bingo Records they've pretty much solved this problem by taking the classics and having them sung by kids. The effect is a compilation of popular songs that you recognize and that your child falls in love with. There is really something about the sound of a child singing that turns any song into a favorite.

Offering several titles including The Bingo Kids Sing Beatles Hits For Kids, The Bingo Kids Sing Motown Hits For Kids and The Bingo Kids Sing Beatles Hits For Kids Volume 2, these cds will become quick favorites. In our house we are huge fans of the Motown Hits cd and my two-year-old requests the song "Do you love me" every night before her bath.

These are great gifts for the kid who has it all -- they even sell a box set which is a great idea.

Also available from the same company are two kid-friendly productions: Smart Beats (fun songs about recycling, dinosaurs, coloring, geography, play time with a hip-hop vibe) and Yoga Child, A Peaceful Place Inside (designed by renowned Yoga Instructor Gail Silver, features voice and music presented in a way that will calm and center children while getting them to use their bodies constructively).

For more information check out www.bingorecords.com.  Bingo Records music is also available for digital download at iTunes, Amazon and many other digital download sites.

Why I Bought My ... iPhone

396pxiphone_display_with_headset The word busy took on a whole new meaning for me when I became a mom. Aside from working a 60+ hour work-week, I also volunteer my time with a breastfeeding support group, toil away all day testing baby products to bring you these incredibly insightful reviews and, most important of all, put all my energy into parenting my two-year-old.

After seamlessly juggling all this for a few months (yeah right!) I started really feeling like a slave to my computer. Checking my email, which I was obligated to do, was becoming the most hated part of my day. I have three email addresses where I receive multiple emails a day and I hated having to spend hours of my time checking and sorting through them. I decided I wanted some sort of Blackberry-type device, (I had seen Danielle emailing away on her Blackberry and craved one ever since) and ultimately decided on the iPhone.

There is no question about it: For a mom on-the-go the iPhone is ideal. For those of you who have been living under a rock, the iPhone is a multi-media, Internet-enabled mobile phone put out by Apple. What makes it different from other mobile devices is its touch-enabled screen which includes a virtual keyboard and buttons.

Baby Jamz toys and music offer an update on the classics

Music World Entertainment and its founder Matthew Knowles -- father of singers Beyonce and Solange Knowles -- created 'Baby Jamz' to provide parents with hip-hop inspired toys and music for preschoolers and babies.  The products are all musical in nature and feature singing by Solange herself, while Solange's 3-year-old son Daniel Julez appears on all product packaging.  The full product line was tested by our soon-to-be 4-year-old son Owen, and our 13-month-old Sam; Each item is available exclusively at Wal-Mart.

Boombox The Boppin' Tunes Boom Box ($14.76) is a shape sorter with the added bonus of letting kids 'mix' three nursery rhymes -- 'Hip, Hop Buckle My Shoe,' 'Twinkle, Twinkle' and 'Wheels on the Bus.'  When a child fits the shape in its correct spot, the shape lights up and a short portion of the nursery rhyme is sung; When all shapes are in place, the nursery rhyme is sung in full, in order to motivate sustained play.  A microphone on the side of the boom box allows for three 'add-in' sounds.  Sam liked this toy quite a bit and plays with it pretty happily, especially the microphone buttons.  Designed to look like a DJ, it's a cute toy and we also liked it.  My only complaint would be that because the shapes don't stay securely in their respective spots (as they would with a traditional shape sorter), they're fairly easy to lose, and once they're gone the toy would be essentially useless.

Dancemat The Move 'N Groove Dance Mat ($19.84) was a little slow to catch on in our house.  Owen loves to dance -- he'll dance in the aisles of the grocery store if the mood strikes -- but he's not really aware of the dance mat concept.  We tried to show him how to use it properly, but he's just not that keyed in yet to the idea of following the beat and using sound effects as an accompaniment.  At the end of the day, he just wants to jump up and down and make noise.  And he made plenty of noise with this toy!  It features three nursery rhymes -- 'Bingo,' 'Mary Had A Little Lamp' and 'This Old Man' -- and seven dance-activated 'spots' on the mat for added hip-hop sounds.  As a general rule, there's not much order in Owen's dancing, and there wasn't much order to the songs he made with the dance mat.  He enjoyed himself, just not really in the way I think the toy is intended.

Music_chair The Mix Master Music Chair ($24.77) is designed for children ages 12-36 months.  Sam and Owen both were intrigued by the chair, but what I liked most about it is the height.  At 13-months, Sam isn't really strong enough to sit in a chair on his own -- but the Mix Master Music Chair is low enough that his feet still touch the ground, which in turn kept him relatively steady in the chair.  A large musical note on the chair seat activates the music, and kids can change the song and sound effects by pressing light-up buttons on each arm of the chair.  As with the dance mat, when being used by a baby or toddler, what you’re most often left with is a disjointed jumble of sounds and songs. But both kids like sitting in the chair and that’s good enough for me!

Cellphonekeys The Jingle and Jam Keychain ($8.88) and Funky Tones Cell Phone ($8.88) are two smaller toys that are perfect for when you’re on-the-go. The keychain, at first glance, isn’t unlike any of the other keychains on the market for babies, except that it offers three buttons which play hip-hop nursery melodies. Not many keychains can say that! The cell phone also plays three nursery rhymes — ‘Old McDonald,’ ‘Buckle My Shoe’ and ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb.’ Although the cell phone appears to have many smaller number buttons, in actuality the songs are activated by pushing one of two larger buttons. Both boys enjoy these toys, especially in the car, and they’re small enough to stash in a diaper bag or purse.

Cdbabyjamz If you find yourself thinking that you can’t possibly sing ‘Wheels On The Bus’ one more time, and you’ve had a tired, boring rendition of ‘Old McDonald’ stuck in your head for days on end, the Baby Jamz Nursery Rhymes CD Volume 1 ($10.47) might be just what you need to break out of the rut. The songs are beautifully sung by Solange Knowles, and they’re so catchy that you really will find yourself bouncing around to nursery rhymes that never inspired you to dance before. All the standards are covered, from ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ to ‘Hush Little Baby’ to ‘Skip To My Lou.’ We take this CD with us in the car, Owen listens to it in his room, and wherever its playing I am never unhappy to hear it — which is rare for me when it comes to children’s music. If you have a budding dancer on your hands, or you’re just looking for something different, this CD is a must-have.

Fast & Feisty: The second CD from Princess Katie and Racer Steve

Yhst26705432187197_1978_90315 The first time I heard a Princess Katie and Racer Steve CD (Songs for the Coolest Kids) I was pleasantly surprised. It’s hard these days to find music that’s the perfect mix of silly, positive and well, not annoying for mom and dad. Songs for the Coolest Kids definitely managed all that and quickly became a regular cd for our car rides as well as our daily before-bath dance parties!  We even got to see Princess Katie and Racer Steve in concert and have a cool picture with Princess Katie herself.  In other words, we're big fans. So we were obviously anticipating the new CD, Fast & Feisty, and were thrilled to finally receive it in the mail.

I am happy to say that Fast & Feisty does NOT disappoint. We have been rockin' out to this CD for the past week now and it, too, has gone into the car CD player (as well as onto my iPod). With great new songs that send the same kind of positive messages that the first CD did, Fast & Feisty is sure to appeal to parents and kids alike. The song We Dress Ourselves became a quick favorite for us.

To sample some music and purchase, check out Princess Katie and Racer Steve's site, princessracer.com.

If you are in the New York Area: The Fast & Feisty cd pre-release concert is on Saturday, January 12th at the Helen Mills Theatre (139 West 26th Street). Check the website to pre-order your tickets!

Susie Tallman's Let's Go CD- Travel, Camp and Car songs

Tallman7 I am the kind of person who keeps one cd in her player for months and months. Usually its something kid-oriented, as my almost two year old son Ben loves music. Right now, we are grooving to Susie Tallman's Let's Go - Travel, camp and Car songs cd.  As a long term summer camp person (I'm an active alumni of Surprise Lake Camp), I loved the songs. Memories of singing these songs around the campfire hit me as we listened to this cd.

We really enjoyed Susie's songs. We had sang some of these songs to Ben, so he recognized them when we played the cd. Don't miss her "On Top of Spaghetti" (which my in laws always sing to him), "Going On a Bear Hunt" (we also have a book with this), "Oh Susanna", "You Are My Sunshine" (which I always sang to him a little baby), "Boom Chicka Boom", and "Ain't Going to Rain no More".  We also loved her version of "Blowing in the Wind".  Her arrangments were modern and her voice soothing. We liked her other songs too (there are 26 in total) and happily listened to this for hours and hours. Click here to see a song list and hear samples from several of her songs.

We recommend this cd - you'll find you know more of these songs than you realize and have fun singing along!! This is Susie's 6th cd for Rock Me Baby Records. She lives in Albequerque, New Mexico with her husband and baby daughter Tessa.

Il Cocco di Mamma: A site for the apple of your eye

Pict0471_gs As a bilingual parent, I was inspired by the story behind Il Cocco di Mamma, a site featuring classic baby tees and gifts with bilingual messages.

Featuring common sayings from around the world, including Ciao!, Qué pasa?  and C'est la vie!, the site was inspired by the owner’s experience growing up in Boston with immigrant parents and spending her summers in Italy.  Plug in “New York” for “Boston” and “Spain” for “Italy” and you have my life in a nutshell, so I was immediately sold.  That initial connection coupled with the opportunity to see for myself how well-made and soft the actual shirts are made me fall in love with the line.  Definitely something you’d want to put on a newborn. I will be doing all my newborn shopping at Il Cocco di Mamma guaranteed, if only because I think the organic cotton Cielo onesie is so perfectly adorable.

The site also features many popular children’s books and music in other languages (Huevos Verdes Con Jamón anyone?), as well as shoes and foreign language wooden blocks (including the Greek, Russian, Hebrew and other alphabets).

Il Cocco di Mamma, by the way, literally translated means “mama’s boy,” but the Italian term of endearment is translated as “the apple of my eye” and is used for both girls and boys.

The company offers free gift wrap in its signature paper with every purchase. Check out the complete selection at www.ilcoccodimamma.com.

Name Your Tune: Personalized CDs

Name_your_tune_cdson One of the cutest CD’s we own is called Name Your Tune and it is basically a personalized compilation of children’s music. Kids hear their name more than 80 times during 14 recognizable songs. For example, the classic "Old MacDonald had a farm..." becomes “Little Catie had a farm…” Name Your Tune also includes personalized versions of Wheels on the Bus, If You're Happy and You Know It, The ABC's and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Name Your Tune is also a hot product amongst celebrity parents - Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon, Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Adam Sandler, Soledad O'Brien and Lauralee Bell are all enjoying Name Your Tune with their kids!

Eric McCormack said that the Name Your Tune CD was a hit with his son and “confirmed his belief that the entire world revolves around him. It's great fun!

You can order your CD at www.nameyourtune.com. There are over 2300 names to choose from but if your child’s isn’t there, be sure to let them know as they are always adding more names.

Songs for the Coolest Kids: Princess Katie and Racer Steve

Prcdimage_small I’m always searching for kids music that I can play in my car for my daughter that doesn’t make me want to reach into the cd player and throw the entire thing out the window while doing 70 on the interstate. Needless to say, I was really happy to receive Songs for the Coolest Kids by Princess Katie and Racer Steve, a cd that we easily play on repeat in our house and in our car on a daily basis.

Songs for the Coolest Kids, performed by husband and wife team Katie O’Sullivan and Steve Borne (better known as Princess Katie and Racer Steve), is full of catchy tunes with a positive undertone. Songs like Sid the Bully, Worrying is Boring and Tell the Truth are not only funny, but also send out the kind of message that you’ll want kids to hear.  The music is done really well (if you didn’t listen to the lyrics you wouldn’t think it was music designed specifically for kids) and Princess Katie has a great voice. As an added bonus, my daughter, Catie, loves hearing her name used in the songs!

If you are looking to buy some great music or want to learn more about Princess Katie and Racer Steve, check out their website, princessracer.com. I highly recommend this cd.
