OnTray: grocery cart gizmo for spill-free snacking

Ontray The only thing that gets me through a trip to the grocery store is snacks -- lots and lots of snacks, to distract my daughter while Mommy decides which cereal has the most fiber and which yogurt is the better deal. But I've dropped her little bowl of Cheerios or peach puffs too many times to count, and she always does the same if I leave it for her to hold (cleanup on aisle 7!). Now there's a product that lets her safely snack on her own and leaves my hands free to fill the cart. It's called the OnTray ($6.99) and it was designed by a mom who was as tired of spills as I was. It's a simple square plastic container that attaches onto any grocery cart handle, and it works like a charm.

I took my 9-month old to Costco the other day, snapped on the OnTray and got all my shopping done without any whining or spillage! Bailey liked it, too, since she could feed herself and not have to depend on me. It also came in handy for free samples, which I could just drop into the OnTray for her! It includes a lid, so you can fill it up before leaving the house and just slide it off when you're ready.

OnTray comes in four colors, is dishwasher safe, and can be bought directly at OnTray2Go.com.

Mutsy Easygrow High Chair: Sit up and take notice!

Zm17972 Baby Allegra's still too young to eat, but she's joined our family during mealtimes by sitting in the Mutsy Easygrow High Chair ($199). I was excited to test this sleek looking high chair because it's adjustable as she grows -- both the seat and the footrest can be easily moved down.

Since Allegra is now 4 months old, with good head and neck control, I used the seat reducer insert to support her (which resembles the Mutsy Grow-up Booster Seat, click here to read that review). With that, she is easily able to sit up in the Easygrow High Chair and bat at her toys (which I placed on the tray). Her big brother is thrilled -- now he can "chat" with her as he eats. Well, he talks, she coos...

Motherlove Herbals Lactation Pack: Got milk?

Product_lac_packIf you are looking for herbal ways to increase your lactation - Motherlove Herbals is THE company to go to.  Galactogogue herbs have been proven to increase breast milk. You can drink them in a tea form or take liquid herbal extracts or capsules of the following herbs: fenugreek, blessed thistle, nettle, anise, dill, fennel seed, goat's rue, raspberry leaf, and alfalfa. Since I want to increase my milk supply, I turned to Motherlove for herbal supplements.

I have been testing out their Lactation Pack. It was a good way to see what versions of their lactation - inducing products I preferred. Click here to find out the differences between the various Motherlove products.

The lactation pack ($21.95) contains:
1 oz. More Milk Plus Liquid Extract
1 oz. Goats Rue Liquid Extract
Sample sizes of More Milk Plus and Goats Rue Vegetarian Capsules
1/4 oz. Nipple Cream
1/4 oz. Diaper Rash & Thrush Relief

With the More Milk Plus Liquid Extract added to my iced tea, you could notice the taste a little bit. And, since I am not used to taking herbal tinctures, I liked the capsules better. The company said that is a common thing - people used to taking herbal remedies prefer using liquid herbal supplements. I liked taking the More Milk Plus Vegetarian capsules (and I actually just ordered two bottles of it for my continued use). The included nipple cream and diaper rash cream have already come in handy (and were such a great small size that I can take them in my diaper bag).

Motherlove Herbals also makes great natural products for labor, delivery and baby.  I also recently reviewed their fab labor and birth products, click here to read that review.

Shop Motherlove.com.

Exclusive for CBB Readers: Use code MMP2008 -  for 10% discount on all More Milk Plus capsules, More Milk Plus Liquid Herbal Extract and More Milk Plus Alcohol Free Liquid Herbal Extract.

Organic Mother's Milk Tea from Traditional Medicinals

Mothersmilk_tea_newI absolutely love the Organic Mother's Milk Tea (around $5.49 per box of 16 tea bags) from Traditional Medicinals. I'm trying to boost my breast milk supply, so I'm drinking it because its a galactagogue -- which means it "promotes the secretion and flow of breast milk".  According to Traditional Medicinals' website, "This tea is based on one of the most widely used galactagogue formulas - this traditional combination of anise, fennel and coriander has been used is often recommended by lactation counselors and medical herbalists. Herbal teas containing anise and fennel have been approved as non-prescription herbal products for nursing mothers by health authorities in Europe."

I love the taste of this tea. It's a combination of spicy, sweet and a little bitter. The directions say to let it steep for 10-15 minutes. It uses tea bags, not loose tea (so you can pop a few in your diaper bag and take it out with you). To be effective, you have to drink between 3-5 cups per day -- which I don't find very hard, because I absolutely love drinking it. But if you are constantly on the go, you might want to keep some brewed already in the fridge and use your favorite water bottle to take it with you (I keep my SIGG Bottle filled). Traditonal Medicinals has been selling this tea for 30 years.  I have seen a difference in my milk production since I've started drinking it (and it does help that I think its delicious too).

Organic Mother's Milk Tea is certified by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) -- 90% organic, using herbs with no added flavors. It's also caffeine free. You should discuss with your doctor or lactation consultant whether it's for you -- especially if you are pregnant and currently nursing another child. Do not use if you have known allergies to aniseed, anethole or fennel or to plants of the Asteraceae (daisy) family such as blessed thistle, calendula, chamomile, echinacea, safflower or yarrow.

Ingredients: Organic bitter fennel fruit 875 mg, organic aniseed fruit 350 mg. Proprietary blend: Organic caraway fruit, organic nettle herb.

You can buy Organic Mother's Milk Tea  online at Traditional Medicinals' online store or in natural food stores.

BoboBaby Food: Frozen and Far From Boring

Apple As 2008 begins, I remind myself to count our myriad of blessings, including those that we enjoy daily, since we live in the greatest era in history to raise a baby. Life with baby is filled with every convenience imaginable -- if our great-grandmothers could see how we raise babies now. Disposable diapers (and that alone would probably qualify as the greatest invention in baby care), ready-to-feed baby foods, wipes warmers, disposable bibs, toys and teething gel and too many more to list. (I loved Teba's review recently of 'Boogie Wipes' never could have conceived of such a wonderful invention!)

Harried parents with infants always open their arms to yet more smart conveniences, and I received a freezer full of them just before my 6-month old was ready to start solids, back in August. But convenience is just the opening act for this eye and taste bud-opening baby food. BoboBaby is a Vancouver-based baby food company that has developed a line of portion-sized frozen baby foods, all of which are certified organic, kosher, age-appropriate, and free of the top nine allergens. They also have some unique recipes to expose your little one's developing taste buds to flavors and combinations you may never have thought of.

Peas of Mind: A healthy toddler's meal

Carrotrisotto_puffet Kids and greens, why can’t they just along?  Some of you are lucky enough to have kids that swallow up their green beans and ask for seconds, but for the most part, in order to feed kids healthy food you have to dress it up in a chicken nugget costume and douse it in ketchup! So what are the alternatives? In the past, I've been tempted to pick up a few of those Gerber toddler TV dinners and Lunchables but who knows what preservatives they contain?  We try to buy as much organic food as possible which can be a challenge when it comes to prepared kid food. One company in San Francisco has found the perfect costume for veggies, and the company name is a perfect match, Peas of Mind.

Peas of Mind is a frozen food company that has invented “Puffets.” Intended as an all-in-one meal for kids 12 months and older, or a super healthy snack for older toddlers, each Puffet is about the size and shape of a hockey puck and can be eaten with your hands. There are four Puffet flavors: Eat Your Greens, Carrot Risotto, Nanna’s Banana and Black Bean Polenta. All flavors contain organic ingredients including fruits, vegetables, and grains. They are individually wrapped and frozen, and sold four Puffets per box.

Peas_of_mind_carrot We tried the Carrot Risotto, which was my favorite (and also contains yams which sweetens it a bit), and Nanna’s Banana, which is basically a noodle kugel and which Anya clearly preferred probably because it's slightly sweet (but no added sugar or preservatives-woo hoo!). The other flavors include Eat Your Greens (which has broccoli and spinach) and Black Bean Polenta. All of the flavors are high in protein and contain the good kind of fat (including omega 3s which is important for proper brain function and development).  As they contain whole milk and eggs, only children without allergies to these things and over the age of 1 should eat them. (Click the extended post for the ingredient lists and nutrition facts.)

The company tells me that some parents are serving Puffets in lunch boxes, since they are individually wrapped and pre-cooked, can be defrosted overnight in the fridge, and are a perfect on-the-go snack. And, believe it or not, parents have found Puffets incredibly satisfying as a pick-me-up during the day. I don't know about that... but the next time I'm looking for an afternoon snack, I might be tempted to try the Eat Your Greens which is high in protein and low in carbs.

We really fight the urge to serve Anya a steady diet of the easy but popular kid foods like chicken nuggets and mac and cheese because we want her to develop healthy eating habits.  Now is the time to start, not when she's in elementary school, going for a lunch of cookies and soda and tossing out her whole lunch bag (like Josh used to do!). I'm all for any company that helps us serve healthy and tasty foods!

They are available in grocery stores in some areas (right now just the west coast) and can be bought online.

Handstand Kids: Italian Cookbook for Kids

HandstandkidsA cookbook for kids is always a great idea. Handstand Kids just released an Italian Cookbook for kids that comes with a cute kid-sized chef's hat. The cookbook is described on the Handstandkids.com website as, "Handstand Kids books are the perfect recipe for kids to learn how to cook, while discovering the people, places, and language of a new country. The first Handstand Kids book journeys to Italy to make delicious and nutritious Italian recipes."

My friend and her two kids, aged 6 1/2 and 4, tested it out. They liked the recipes and made a few that came out delicious. Their mom, my friend, recommended the cookbook for kids older than 6, because she felt the directions were a little complicated for them. Yvette Garfield, of Handstand Kids, wanted to add that she teaches cooking classes with 4 and 6 year old kids and they love it.

As a educator and former Food Network staffer (1994-1999), I loved that the cookbook was written for kids. Cooking is a wonderful way to teach literacy, math and science. It promotes helpfulness and listening skills, as well as being a great way to bond with your kids. Or encourage that budding chef!

The next book from this company will be a Mexican Cookbook, which will be released in Spring 2008. Sounds yummy to me! To find it in a retail location, click here, or to order online, click here.

Deceptively Delicious - A New Cookbook by Jessica Seinfeld

CovershotI'm sure you've heard about this new cookbook, and the controversy about it (which I will address at the end of this review), written by Jessica Seinfeld (yes, Jerry's wife and mother to their 3 children).  I love the concept behind it, especially with a picky toddler refusing to seat 90% of his veggies.

According to her website, www.deceptivelydelicious.com, "Jessica Seinfeld, like many busy parents, struggled to get her three kids to eat healthily. After much trial-and-error — and many mealtime battles — she discovered a foolproof system: delicious and easy-to-make stealth recipes that sneak in puréed veggies so kids will never suspect the foods they love are actually good for them! Deceptively Delicious has all of Jessica's winning combinations, including cauliflower in macaroni and cheese, and spinach in brownies. She also shares tips on making healthy snacks and improving store-bought foods."

Armed with a new 7 cup Cuisinart food processor, I tackled making Jessica's purées first. So much easier than using my now broken blender, this food processor easily puréed the vegetables. I loved that Seinfeld gave directions on how to cook and purée every veggie under the sun.  Spinach was steamed first and then pureed. I quickly figured out how much 1/4 of a cup was and I liked the method of putting the purées into little ziplocs. Then I went full steam ahead the next day, roasting and puréeing a butternut squash, steaming and puréeing a whole cauliflower, several yellow squash, and finally several zucchinis. I followed her hints to write the dates created on the bags with a sharpie. I froze practically all of the purées (since our kitchen was about to be demolished and I really wasn't going to be able to cook that much).  That night I made her chicken nuggets, which were so easy to make! My husband, son and I loved it. I was surprised that Ben didn't notice that under the breading, the spinach made the chicken green. My husband and I thought the spinach gave it a great taste and we couldn't get enough of it. The recipe's a keeper!!  That night I also made a family size box of Annie's Mac and Cheese and put yellow squash puree in it. Ben loved that too!  I froze meal size portions afterwords for easy serving during our construction.

Since we are now in the middle of construction, I obviously can't cook anymore, but that doesn't mean I can't use the purées!! I kept out a yellow squash puree and keep adding it to Ben's mac and cheese (in the little Beechnut or Gerber containers). It does work a little better, if you mix it in a new bowl to serve. He can't tell the difference and I know he's getting his veggies. Unfreezing the bagged purées in a bowl full of hot water is also easy. She recommends cutting on of the corners of the bag to pour the puree out (another good idea).

Now I am also adding flaxseed meal to many of our dishes also, as Jessica recommends.  II used it top the corn muffins I made last week (from a mix) and didn't affect the taste at all. As soon as we have a kitchen again, I plan on making many more of Jessica's recipes. Oprah recently featured Jessica (and loved the food). Jessica's tips and recipes can be found on Oprah.com. A portion of author's royalties will be donated to Baby Buggy.

Also following Jessica Seinfeld's advice, I keep offering a small selection of veggies at every meal for him and I always offer him what we are eating (an entree with a vegetable side dish too).   Sometimes my little fussy eater will actually take a few bites. My husband and I love to eat vegetables, so I hope my son will come back to eating them voluntarily, Until then, I'm going to be deceptive!

Click here to buy this book!

Writer's Note: Since I reviewed this book and Missy Chase Lapine's book, The Sneaky Chef, recently, I feel qualified to comment on the NY Daily News's recent Rush and Molloy story about Jessica's book. Click here to read my review of The Sneaky Chef.  I feel, even though the concepts in the book are similar, the puree recipes are very different. In Seinfeld's book, one vegetable at a time is pureed for use. Lapine's book's purees are done by color (the white puree, for example is cauliflower and zucchini, with a little lemon juice). Yes, some of the recipes are similar, but they both use kid friendly recipes like Mac and Cheese, chicken nuggets...etc..  How different can you really make those recipes? For chicken nuggets, It makes sense to add a vegetable puree to the egg mixture, before you put it in the breading and cook it! I enjoyed both books and feel that they should serve as a companion to each other, rather than replace the other. The more suggestions on how to get my child to eat his veggies, the better!

According to Vogue's September 2007 article, Talking Fashion: Norwich Notes, Jessica Seinfeld had some help with her book. Chef Jennifer Iserloh (www.skinnychef.com) helped develop and test the recipes. She also had input from nutritionist Joy Bauer, parenting experts Jean Mandelbaum, Ph.D and Pat Shimm, and the Foreword was written by Dr. Roxana Mehran and Dr. Mehmet Oz.

What do you do to stop mealtime battles? Do you agree or disagree with the Deceptively Delicious methods?

DWINK: The Universal Drink Box Holder

Dwinkgrouphr If you give your kid a juice box the first thing he will do is squirt it so as to see the juice squirt out the top of the box. That is why  DWINK, the universal “dwink” holder is such a genius product.

Invented by a mom who was frustrated from cleaning up juice squirts, the product is designed to hold all types of individual drink boxes or pouches (including soy milk boxes and extra-small juice boxes – you just insert them sideways rather than longways if that’s the case).

DWINK has already found its way into the hands of celebrities such as Mark Wahlberg and the Pitt-Jolie parenting duo.

DWINK is available in four fun colors at www.mydwinkbox.com.  At $4.99 this product is a steal and, in my opinion, a must-have for every mom!

Nutrabella Bellybar: Nutrition for before, during & after pregnancy

3bars_photo Even though I am not a huge fan of snack bars I could see the benefit of them: they momentarily satisfy hunger, are usually nutritious and they travel easy. Still finding a snack bar that is both nutritious and good tasting is pretty rare. Nutrabella Bellybar isn’t the most mouth-watering snack bar I’ve had, but it’s definitely tasty and it most certainly is the most nutritious.

I don’t know that I could have stomached it in the early days of my pregnancy when even the thought of plain bread made me queasy but I could totally see how it would come in handy those first few weeks home from the hospital when I was still learning to breastfeed and often forgot to feed myself. The Bellybar is touted as such – the snackbar that can carry you from pre-pregnancy to post pregnancy – so my idea isn’t far-fetched.

Convenience aside, the three available flavors – Berry Nutty Cravings, Baby Needs Chocolate (my favorite and I am not even a big fan of chocolate) and Mellow Oat – are also filled with nutritious things like Omega-3s and Omega-6s and are made with all-natural ingredients. In fact, one bar daily may contain all the supplemental nutrients needed during normal pregnancies & nursing (ask your doctor about this before you drop the vitamins).

Celebrity moms who enjoy Nutrabella Bellybar include Brooke Shields, Melania Trump, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams.

Bellybar can be purchased at a lot of online retailers and at brick and mortar stores like Motherhood/Maternity and Whole Foods. Bellybars will run you about $2.50 each or about $30 for a case of 12.

Beaucoup: Do yourself a favor

Babypetitsfours500 Mmmmm…how happy do you think I was to get baby petit fours in the mail? You can only imagine. Cheesy baby shower favors don’t have to be the norm. Beaucoup offers some of the most unique and elegant party favors that I have come across.

If the baby-themed petit fours aren’t your style, Beaucoup offers everything from personalized mint tins to custom designer cookies. But my favorites are definitely the diaper stacker sachets – they are so adorable and there are so many colors and styles to choose from!

Beaucoup not only offers a huge selection of favors that make it a favorite among celebrities but the website is also super-easy to navigate and the customer service is excellent. They even offer theme ideas to take the stress off of you when you have so much other planning to do.

While I was busy gorging on my petit fours I remembered that I actually ordered heart tins to use as place cards for my daughters baptism from Beaucoup so I can personally attest to their excellent customer service. I even received a handwritten note thanking me for my order!

Prices vary according to item so check out their website for some easy shopping. The biggest challenge you’ll have is trying to limit your order to only a few items.
