Kushies Cloth Diapers: Our adventure with cloth diapering

Img_2449

I was shocked at how many disposable diapers we were using per day for my two kids. Then I pictured all of those diapers in a landfill. Scary, huh? So, I decided to try cloth diapers from Kushies for our 5-month-old (and stepped up the potty training for my toddler). There are a few factors for me to consider when it comes to cloth diapering: We live in an apartment and we use coin operated washing machines in the basement. Due to schedules, I can only do laundry a few nights a week. What was I going to do with soiled diapers? How much was it going to cost to wash all these diapers and would I have to wash them multiple times? Since we had just gotten a new diaper pail, the Diaper Dékor Plus, I used it to store the soiled ones. When I needed to use a disposable diaper, I would just use my old pail.

I was really impressed with Kushies' Cloth Diapers. Baby Allegra loved them from the start -- they were so soft and comfortable for her. We tried the Classic Infant Diapers 5 pack ($57.25) and the Diaper Wraps ($8.60 each) -- which you can put over the diaper to give it a little extra absorbency during nighttime, naptime, etc. Kushies' diapers are made with 8 layers of 100% cotton flannelette. They have velcro tabs, so no diaper pins needed. They have a special flap allowing for more absorbency (folded in front for boys and in the middle for girls). The prints are very cute too. During the summer, they can even look like part of an outfit. I definitely had loads of questions - how to wash, etc., but I easily found the answers in their FAQ's.

Mama Mio Helps New Mom Nicole Kidman Get Her Body Back

Mama Mio Smoothie Kit We're told that Nicole Kidman’s personal spa therapist Sarah Choi loves Mama Mio, especially their Smoothie Kit ($58), a great choice for expecting mamas -- it contains their Moisturizing Shower Cream, Body Buff (natural pumice micro-granules blended with sweet almond oil), and their omega packed O-Mega Oil to make your body silky smooth. Sarah LOVES all the products and professional spa treatments, available at The Ritz-Carlton Spas and exclusive spots like Spa Terre at Little Palm Island, and recommends them for all of her pregnant clients.

While Mama Mio is best known for their maternity products, they now have a line for body after baby. Celebrity postpartum stories highlight fitness and nutrition but no one seems to mention the slack skin that comes from the big strrrrretch of the pregnant belly, thighs, and boobs. Their products promise to return your skin to pre-pregnancy condition by healing scars, minimizing stretch marks, and softening and tightening up skin.

CBB Deal: Get free standard shipping (UPS Ground) and a free deluxe Mama Mio bodycare sample when you use code CELEBSKIN at mamamio.com (expires July 31, 2008). One per customer, while supplies last, can’t be used with any other coupon.

CBB Reader Deal: 20% off Shady Day products!

20 The summer sun is growing more intense, meaning babies (and adults) need even more protection from its damaging rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends an SPF of at least 30 to 55 for babies, and one brand that falls into that range is Shady Day. CBB's Senior Editor, Danielle, is a huge fan:

For our recent two-week trip to Italy, I had packed Shady Day wipes (left, $14 for 15) as an afterthought, but I’m definitely packing them first for our next vacation -- and in our diaper bag all of the time. I love that they are portable, fit almost anywhere, non-greasy, water-resistant, and have an SPF of 30. Normally, I hate the kind of sunscreen you have to touch or rub in because it’s hard to remove from your hands since it's waterproof, but Shady Day Wipes don’t leave you wanting to clean your hands right away. They are my new diaper bag must-have.

For the next two months, CBB Readers can help keep their kids sunburn-free thanks to a 20% discount on Shady Day purchases. Just use code CBB20% at check-out.

Kenzie Klips: Felt clips you'll want right now

Il_430xn27130826Regular readers might know that my daughter has quite the clip collection.  I'll admit it: I love everything girlie and clips certainly fall into this category. I am always thrilled when I find a clip that really makes me think that I definitely need to add it to my -- ahem, my daughter's -- collection.

Kenzie Klips definitely fall into this 'must-have' category. Made of 100% wool felt, these clips have a non-slip strip that ensure that they stay put in even the finest hair. And if you have the type of kid who, like mine, says "me do it" a lot and must adorn her own locks, fear not because Kenzie Klips are designed specifically with chubby little hands in mind and won't unravel at the edges.

What I like about these clips is that they are made over a single prong alligator clip -- these just work better in curly hair like my daughter's -- and that they come in so many designs. And now that my daughter's hair is finally long enough to be pulled into pig tails, I love that all the clips can be made into pig tail holders too. Anyone feel another collection coming on?

Check out the abundant selection at www.kenzieklips.etsy.com.

Exclusive for CBB Readers: Enjoy a FREE Perfectly Pink Flower Hair Clip -- perfect for summer -- with any purchase over $25 when you enter the code CBBFREEBIE into the 'Message to Seller' section at checkout. Expires 7/19/08.

TruKid: Skincare with a healthy message

Sunnydays_040808My almost-3-year-old doesn't like sunscreen and when you ask her why, she has a really simple answer for you: It smells.  Still, I refuse to relent and the rule of our household is that we don't leave without applying SPF 30 on every visible piece of our body (even if it does mean we're a little stinky).  By making sunscreen a rule that we follow very rigidly, I'm instilling an important habit in her that will last a lifetime.

Such healthy habits are the premise behind TruKid products. The skincare line, which offers organic products that are free of harmful ingredients (think parabens, phthalates, etc.), comes with a message: that healthy habits should start early and last a lifetime.  The accompanying website, www.TruKid.com, highlights each product with a healthy habits skincare lesson and song to reinforce the message.

Deal of the Day: Storksak diaper bags are 40% off

Storksakgigisky Storksak, a celebrity favored diaper bag, is running a sale of 40% off several styles including Mia, Gigi, and Donna, making them more attainable for regular moms. We've written about them often- check out our most recent review.

Angelina Jolie
has toted their Gigi bag in chocolate (not on sale but available in baby blue, pictured left) and their Emily bag in chocolate (not on sale), while Brad Pitt has their Jamie Unisex bag in black (not on sale) and their Cole bag.

When then-pregnant Jessica Alba appeared on Ellen, audience members received Storksak Gigi and Emily bags. Ellen remarked, "It doesn't even look like a diaper bag," and Jessica agreed, "It looks like a purse, I have it."

Elisabeth Hasselbeck spoke about her love for her Gigi bag on The View; it was among the items audience members received on her last episode before giving birth to her son. She received it as a gift when she had Grace and said she loved the bag because it had tons of room, looked great and had really cool zip up pockets on the outside of the bag. Other celebrity parents who have Storksak bags include Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler, Matt Damon, and Jenna Elfman mentioned hers in an Us Weekly interview.

If you'd like to buy one of the non-sale bags, visit BlissLiving.com and use coupon code CBB10 to save 10% (expires 08/31/08) or use code FREESHIP for free shipping on purchases over $99.

Picaboo: We finally found you!

PicaboologoThere are so many online photo companies out there that it's hard to keep track of them all in your quest to find the perfect one for your needs -- but when you check out Picaboo, you may have found an end to your lengthy search.  Sure they offer personalized photo books and cards like all the others, but who else besides Picaboo can offer you as much design flexibility?  Take for example the ability to use any photo of your choosing as the background template -- allowing any great photographer to display their own shots, instead of the usual (and often boring) generic ones that are provided.  It even seems like they found an answer to the -- at times -- forever-long process we all dread: photo uploading.  With their free downloading software, customers can use pictures that are already on their hard drive, so there's little to no photo waiting time...other than the time you take deciding which great pictures you want to use!

For those of us who are computer-challenged (or just lazy!), Picaboo has come up with a helpful option: Storyflow.  The only part you have to take care of with Storyflow is putting your pictures in the order you want and then sit back and let Picaboo do the rest of the work for you.  In a short amount of time, Storyflow uses your predetermined theme and auto-creates a unique picture book just for you.  With so many great options, you just may be creating virtual scrapbooks all day long!

CBB Deal: Picaboo is offering a 50% discount on their photo albums with coupon code "1P50PO-SE".

MamaBargains.com: A deal of the day just for parents and kids

Mamabargains There's a new breed of shopping sites out there- sometimes referred to as "deal-a-day." For a limited time,  they offer limited quantities of one product at great prices. Since Woot launched in 2004, tons of these sites have cropped up (others include Jellyfish Smack, SteepandCheap.com, RueLaLa.com), and there's even a site dedicated to tracking all of the deals called DealSucker, but there's now a deal-a-day site just for parents and kids under 10 called MamaBargains.com.

Picture_1 Here's how it works: they offer one hot deal at a time until they run out, and then they offer another one. You are guaranteed to save 50-80% off of the retail price and are guaranteed to have the lowest price on that product anywhere. As I write this, they are offering Timi & Leslie's Tag-a-Long diaper bag, normally $90 and going for $27. They offer several prints and you can watch as the little mom cartoon runs from "lots left!" to "all gone!" Most of the products are closeouts, out of season, overstock, but some are even brand new items that haven't even been released yet.

In the last few days, they've had a number of Timi & Leslie diaper bags and Me In Mind footwear. Future brands they have on board include Elephantito, New Native, My Baby Nest, Dogwood clothing, Slinglings. They are working on getting more baby blankets, cloth diapers, wooden toys, but best of all, they take recommendations! If there's something you're looking to buy, you can request it and they'll do their best to get it.

It's so addicting because you can't wait to find out what will be offered next. They are working on an alert tool to let you know when a new product is available. I know I can't wait for that. One tip I have for them is to add an ability to post or link to reviews. This is a feature of Woot and enables others to learn more about the product. Since it's available only a short time, you don't have much time to research the item when buying it so it would be great if they linked to credible reviews on sites such as CBB and/or allowed other MamaBargain shoppers to add their feedback if they already own the product. Since the site literally launched this week, I guess I'll cut them some slack and wait for that feature to roll out.

One Lil' Cupcake: The best felt hair clips

Monograms_iconI really loved these hair clips from One Lil' Cupcake. I've mentioned them before, but I didn't realize just how much I loved them until Catie actually lost her pink heart clip during an unfortunate incident on the slide. We left the park in tears and I was so busy consoling her that I didn't realize the clip had fallen off until we were well on our way home.

I am so lucky that the kind people at One Lil' Cupcake so generously replaced our heart clip and also made us the proud owners of a chocolate flower and an indigo cupcake! I really, really love these, partly because they stay in her hair 99.9% of the time (note to self: check hair next time head is bumped on slide) but mostly because they are just so darn adorable. I mean really, really adorable.

On Sale: Canon PowerShot SD 1000 Digital Elph

Picture_1 Readers are always asking what camera we take our photos with. Josh has a few fancy cameras that are pretty expensive ($500+) but my camera is pretty inexpensive -- and it just got even more inexpensive.

The model is the Canon PowerShot SD 1000 Digital Elph. Originally $200, now $120 at Toys R Us (in-store only) -- The Toys R Us flyer says the price is valid April 6-12, 2008.

It features 7.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom and a 2.5 inch LCD screen. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have optical image stabilizer which helps correct a slightly shaky hand or active kid. My previous camera, the PowerShot SD 850, had it but alas a can of soda which exploded in my Not Rational diaper bag killed it (and the bag was kind of killed too).

Click Continue Reading to read tips on taking better pictures and to see some photos taken with the camera.

Lotus_02 It is really such a blessing that I had a little girl, if only because I get to share all her hair accessories. Puj Go Sling: Simple slings for simple parents

Product8_medium Regular readers of this page will remember that I love me a pouch sling. The go sling, from Puj Baby is similar in concept and just as easy to use. Unlike pouch slings which hold your baby a little low on your body, the Go Sling holds the baby a little higher and closer to your center of gravity. You can't do a cradle hold with the Go Sling because it's for older babies who are already holding their heads up (picture the baby in the pouch sling in the hip carry or in the tummy-to-tummy hold and it's the same sort of thing). Check instructions on how to properly wear your Go Sling in this video.

The Puj Go Sling is not only wonderfully made but also incredibly beautiful. Available in five different colors, the sling is machine washable and easily folds right into your bag when not in use. Also worth mentioning -- at $48 this sling is a steal!

Baby Dews: Head scarves for your little one

Kendal1As a mom of a girl I am always looking for new ways to accessorize her hair -- specifically if it means that said accessory gets her hair out of her face!  A while ago a reader of this column asked me to check out Baby Dews, head scarves for children and babies, and I fell in love.

These adorable scarves are made to look like they're tied on but really they're little headbands with elastic that you pull over your kids head (can't hurt them). Made from vintage material (the selection is unbelievable -- you'll find that you can't choose just one), they are really soft and embroidered with a flower.

These are really adorable and come in sizes small through extra large. Check out the selection at www.babydews.com. Shipping is always FREE!

Bosom Button: Don't let it all hang out

Crystal_bosom_button_on_shirtWhen I was in my first trimester of pregnancy there were certain, um, areas of my body that clearly revealed my secret. As one coworker put it, "you were either pregnant or you had just had a really great boob job." My breasts literally grew two bra sizes in a period of twelve weeks. It was quite out of control and no amount of pulling or pinning was going to keep the girls in their place. I quite wish I had discovered the Bosom Button back then, as it could have easily spared me those weeks of grief.

Essentially the Bosom Button is a pin embellished with a stone or gem that you pierce through your clothing (it fastens with a clutch at the back). You use them primarily to keep low tops from revealing to much but there are several other uses for them (check out the pictures on the site). I personally have been wearing mine with my wrap dresses which I used to have to wear tank tops underneath because they were showing off more than I wanted to put out on display. Available in ten different colors, you can buy yours in sets of three.

Exclusively for CBB Reviews Readers: Get 20% off with code CelebBaby. Valid through 5/01/08. Check out the full selection at www.bosombutton.com.

Monster Proof Pajamas: PJ's sure to scare the monsters away

Group3stuffpjbookor

Monsters under the bed, in the closet or, in my daughter's case, in the light fixture ... these are normal childhood fears that cause lots of sleepless nights for both parent and child. An easy way to calm your child's fears is by introducing them to Zam, Zimbo, Zeek, Zelly and Zack, the five members of the monster family who make up The Sleeping Zzzzz©.

Created by Kathy Carabasi, Monster Proof® pajamas and The Sleeping Zzzzz© children's book help ease children's fears of monsters. The book tells the story of the five members of the Sleeping Zzzzz family, each with their unique personality that represents one of the five senses. Each member of the Sleeping Zzzzz family can use their special monster proof power to see, lick, hug, listen for and sniff out monsters.

Amy Michelle: So glad for my Gladiola

Gladiola In 2003, two girlfriends -- Amy and Michelle -- found themselves discussing diaper bags, and why it's so difficult to find one that doesn't sacrifice style for substance. From that conversation a company was born: The aptly named Amy Michelle. Four years later, the company offers up a diaper bag for just about every conceivable taste, as evidenced by the celebrity moms they've gifted -- Angelina Jolie, Marcia Cross, Naomi Watts, Jillian Dempsey, and others. Amy Michelle is doing its best to give these moms, and moms everywhere, what may have previously eluded them -- the best of both worlds.

We recently tested the Gladiola Baby Bag Tote ($135) in black patent leather with rich red lining.  It's part of Amy Michelle's 'Chic Baby Bag' line, and I have to say, I'm in love! The bag is sophisticated but sassy; When I'm carrying it, I find myself with a little extra bounce in my step for sure. I was worried that the patent leather would be too flashy next to my normal 'mom' attire but it hasn't been at all; The bag looks as great with a pair of jeans and flats while out running errands as it does with something a little fancier.  The interior fabric is a dramatic contrast to the bag's exterior; I love the way the rich red lining pops against the black patent leather, and the red is just bright enough that you can find whatever it is you need inside the bag with ease.

Reviews Roundup: Funny, comfortable maternity tees

Though I am not pregnant or even thinking about number two I still love finding great maternity t-shirts.  Here is a roundup of a few favorites I've ran across recently:

Belly Flirt
Brad
Just because you're not carrying a celebrity baby doesn't mean you can't con people into thinking you are! This great collection from Belly Flirt includes the tongue-in-cheek Brad's Baby tee. Well, a girl can dream, can't she?

These shirts are great because the soft cotton grows with your belly.  I can actually see these becoming a quick favorite because of the fit and because the fabric feels like the kind of t-shirt that you end up sleeping in long after it's wearable in public just because it's so comfortable.

Other favorites from the line include Sugar Mommy and I Used to be a Size O. Check out the full selection at bellyflirt.com.

Exclusively for CBB Reviews Readers: Enter code "Celebrity Babies" for 10% off entire purchase!

Jestations
Folicacid_whitepink_med The first time I laid eyes on these shirts from Jestations I had one reaction: how can I choose just one? Thankfully I don't have to but seriously, you won't be able  to walk away from this selection with just one t-shirt in hand.

I still have trouble deciding whether I love Dropping Folic Acid or You Touchy, I Bitey more. And I have a coworker in particular who right now would love to own the You're big too but I wasn't going to mention it shirt. But I seriously think that if I could truly, truly only purchase one, it would have to be the My Dad Still Thinks I'm a Virgin shirt, hands-down.

Whether you're the type who loves being pregnant or the kind who can't wait to be done with it, you'll love these shirts from Jestations.  Check out the full, fun selection at jestations.com.

Exclusively for CBB Reviews Readers: FREE SHIPPING on all orders when you enter momsrstars at check-out.

Bellies by Calista
Epidurals These shirts from Calista Clothiers' Bellies by Calista line are sure to strike a chord with urban preggies. The signature "epidurals anonymous" and "preggers in the city" shirts are available to be shipped. The other styles, like "week infinity," "nausea inc." and, my personal favorite, "abs of steel" must be pre-ordered on the site or by calling 410.926.438.

Check out the selection at www.belliesbycalista.com.

Exclusively for CBB Reviews Readers: Use code BELLIES10 for 10% off plus FREE SHIPPING for orders over $50.

Georgie Tees
Base3 An oldie but goodie (I have mentioned this shirt three times already on the Celebrity Baby Blog), the Made it Past Third Base t-shirt from Georgie Tees is my favorite maternity shirt ever. It just makes me laugh hysterically every time I see it.

Other great ones from the line include Does this shirt make me look fat? and No longer childproof. Pregnant moms who need a little pick-me-up would really appreciate these shirts.

Check out the entire selection at www.georgietees.com.

Pineapple Cove Baby: Add a little glamour to your diaper changes

Blue_antique_quilt An on-the-go diaper change, for obvious reasons, should be as simple as possible. But there's no unspoken rule that it needs to take place on a drab piece of nondescript vinyl, either. In an attempt to balance the need for simplicity with a woman's need for style, Deborah Stepler launched Pineapple Cove Baby two years ago, and has since gifted celebrity moms like Melissa Joan Hart, Holly Robinson Peete and Gwen Stefani with items from her upscale 'Simple Change Diapering Collection.' Consisting of an infant change pad, a diaper wallet and a toddler change pad -- each of which are available in a selection of 8 fabric/trim combinations -- Pineapple Cove's products add a glamorous touch to the decidedly non-glamorous practice of changing a diaper.

coup d'etat Brooklyn: Live to change something

Ttb_blackgold Recently I saw a guy I work with wearing a t-shirt that said Teach the Babies and immediately knew that I had to have one. After getting a bit nosy with him I discovered that the t-shirt comes from coup d'etat, a design company based in Brooklyn. I quickly bought one for myself and another for Danielle and this quickly became my favorite shirt ever.

As a parent I love this shirt first and foremost because of the message that it sends. Actually, though I have a hunch that we're not their target audience, coup d'etat's message as a company in general should be widely supported by parents everywhere in my opinion.
