Laughing Starfish Jewelry: Handcrafted beadwork and nursing necklaces

Nursingnecklace

One of the most memorable gifts I received when I first had my daughter was a nursing necklace from my friend Kara. Both of us had been pregnant at the same time (we even had the same due date though she ended up having her daughter the day before me) and both of us spent a lot of time during those nine months sharing our anxieties about nursing, scared that we wouldn't be successful at it. Then our girls were born and Kara's daughter, Ava, was a nursing champ from the start but I had a really difficult time getting Catie to latch on for the first week and a half and when I received the nursing necklace in the mail it really meant the world to me. I ended up wearing it everyday for a year and a half and still wear it from time to time. The nursing necklaces from Laughing Starfish Jewelry reminded me of that gift though the site offers a complete line of jewelry, including bracelets, earrings, sets and other accessories.

For a nursing mom, a nursing necklace is a wonderful gift. Simply a necklace (usually with a pendant) that moms wear around their neck, nursing necklaces are designed to be interesting and fun for little hands that like to explore their surroundings -- usually by tugging and yanking on colorful jewelry that is hanging in plain view. As a breastfeeding counselor I often receive phone calls from moms of four-month-olds who say that nursing has become incredibly challenging because their baby is so distracted. Around this age babies will also start to grab at mom's face or pull on necklaces not designed to be pulled on so forcefully, so the nursing necklace really comes in handy.

Easterbasket1 The necklaces at Laughing Starfish Jewelry are designed specifically with these babies in mind incorporating a design that distributes the tension that exploring fingers might place on a necklace with a pendant that can slide around on the cord from which it hangs.  This serves both to alleviate some of the pressure a child can place on mom's neck as well as provide some calming or focusing entertainment for the baby.

Aside from functionality, the necklaces at Laughing Starfish Jewelry are beautifully designed and most moms would probably want to wear them long after their nurslings have weaned. I had a terrible time trying to pick one design that I liked and could have easily walked away with five.
