Beautiful Bassinets from Cariboo

cariboobassinet.jpg From the very first night we brought our baby home, he has been sleeping in a gorgeous classic bassinet from Cariboo ($359.95). I have only one regret about this bassinet -- that I did not have it for my other three kids.

Cariboo makes a high quality product. Their pieces are hand crafted in New Zealand from sustainable radiata wood, with a lead-free finish, PBDE-free mattress and formaldehyde-free bassinet board. You can choose from one of three finishes. We chose the mahogany finish; It blends perfectly with our bedroom furniture, making it so much easier to keep the baby in the room with us. No cringing at ugly baby gear here! The design of the Cariboo Bassinet is simple but still so much nicer than anything I had for my poor, neglected other kids. We kicked them all out of our room by the time they were two-months-old, but little Leo will be enjoying the infant version of "late check out" from the master-suite hotel.

Ju-Ju Be's BeRightBack: I'm sweet on this backpack diaper bag

Berightback_groovygardenWith spring definitely in bloom, my children and I are outside constantly -- and our new Ju-Ju-Be BeRightBack backpack ($158) has been right along with us. With a baby and a toddler, I have to tote a lot of stuff. When we are in active mode (ie. park, museum, zoo), a diaper backpack is a better choice.  It's much easier to wear while running around after my toddler (with a baby strapped to my front). Organization has always been tough for me, but with all the great places to stash our stuff, Ju-Ju-Be's fancy-yet-functional BeRightBack backpack has been a dream come true. Ju-Ju-Be calls it "the ultimate hybrid -- a traditional full featured ergonomic backpack, with details and the form of a beautiful fashion bag and with all of Ju-Ju-Be's standard features included." Some of the standard features of Ju-Ju-Be's bags include: Teflon® coated exterior fabric, a brightly-colored satin waterproof lining with a special antimicrobial treatment to kill germs, mildew, fungus and bacteria -- which will also help you find your stuff easier, because of the lighter lining, plus a comfy memory foam changing pad.

Celebrity fans of Ju-Ju-Be's diaper bags are Katie Holmes, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Garner, Britney Spears and Matt Damon (he was gifted with the JJB Dad Bag when daughter Isabella was a baby).

I love the fun and flippant "Groovy Garden" pattern on this backpack. The light teal, with pink and orange mod flowers really brings spring to life (and will also work all year round). The print was inspired by a design submitted by one of their "pink ladies" -- from the Pink Room on their site, where real moms congregate to share their opinions with the company's designers, and also to win a bag of their choice EACH WEEK when they reply to the weekly topic (some are serious, some silly.)   Click here to read Missy's recent review of the BeTween bag (which the "pink ladies" also helped by giving feedback on the features they wanted for this bag).

Baby Boot Camp Speedster Deluxe by Kelty: Ding, ding, we have a winner!

Bbckelty Imagine you're in the market for a jogging stroller, and you happened to have a girlfriend who had used -- at some point -- just about every available model on the market.  Imagine she'd logged hundreds of miles with these strollers, knew their strengths and weaknesses, knew how they were made, and by whom, having studied every nuance, from the safety features to the size of the basket underneath.  You'd want her input before you pulled the trigger, right?

Good news!  You didn't realize it, but you already have that girlfriend in Kristen Horler.  The founder of Baby Boot Camp spent more than two years testing countless jogging strollers and when it came time to choose a stroller which would bear the BBC brand, she chose the Kelty Speedster.  It's a hardcore jogging stroller for serious runners, but at a manageable size and with user-friendly features that make it just as appealing for non-jogging, everyday use.

Why you shouldn't share breast pumps

Since it keeps coming up on my local mother's group message board (shout out to Mothers & More SOMA!) and I've seen it mentioned in our Medela Freestyle giveaway entries, I thought it would be a good time to address a key issue with breast pumps - why you should not share them with other women.

Since a breast pump can cost in the $200-400 range, it's very tempting to borrow a friend's breast pump instead of buying a new one. We cannot say this strongly enough- you should not use another woman's breast pump. It's so important that the FDA recommends against it as well.

I've heard two skeptical views from local mothers- that the FDA doesn't conduct independent research - that their recommendations come from the manufacturers who forward the results to the FDA, and that of course the recommendation coming from the manufacturer is self-serving- so they can sell as many pumps as possible. They do have some merit but if you take that stance, you'll never trust anyone or anything!

There are two key issues- contamination and motor strength.

Contamination
Many people think that if they buy new tubing and breast shields that they can safely use another's breast pump. This is true for hospital grade breast pumps, but not for home versions. It's not the tubing you need to worry about- it's the contamination of the motor- the part the tubing plugs into. In order to create suction to simulate the baby's sucking, the motor pulls air (like a vacuum) into itself. Your bacteria is going in and out of the pump every time you use it and you can't sterilize it.

Certain models, like the Amedas and Playtex Embrace, have a filter that prevents bacteria from being sucked into the pump motor mechanism, but with the filter-less Medela models, there is nothing to prevent this. Instead of doubting the veracity of this information about contamination, I would question why Medela refuses to, in the words of a lactation consultant I know, " add a ten cent filter" to prevent this.

(As an aside, I think it's important not to look at this only anecdotally because there are numerous risky behaviors or activities that don't happen to us or people we know personally, yet we still avoid doing them.)

Motor strength
But there's another issue involved- and I think it's probably the more important one- the power of the motor itself. Non-hospital grade breast pumps are meant as single-user, single-use products and are not guaranteed to work for one mom when it's been used by another. (In fact, sharing a pump with another mom voids the warranty.) Especially since double electric pumps are often used 2-3x a day for a year, the motor often burns out or at least is slowed substantially by this usage. That's totally okay though- that's why the pumps are under $400 versus several thousand for a hospital grade pump which is intended to be used by multiple users for an extended period of time (and it has that filter!).

If you've inherited a pump from someone or used yours with multiple kids, it WILL work but it's definitely going to be much slower. Since the power motor is what literally sucks the milk out of you, a pump with a stronger motor (or a newer or less used one) is going to be that much more effective at doing its job. If it's the only pump you've ever used, you have nothing to compare it to. If it's your old pump, at least you know about its history, though you may have forgotten what the suction felt like. A less strong motor is going to affect the amount of milk you can express (or length of time you need to pump per session) and in my mind, may limit the time that a woman breastfeeds her child. If she is not able to pump as much milk as her child needs, she may decide to supplement with formula or abandon breastfeeding altogether.

When you look at it from a cost-perspective, buying a brand new pump is still a bargain compared to the cost of formula.

Britax Boulevard: Take a seat

Britaxboulevard I love Britax car seats, and I'm not sure I'll ever use another brand. I recently got the chance to check out the Britax Boulevard cat seat and I am happy to say it's fabulous! Click here to read my review of the Boulevard's "little" sister the Diplomat.

My biggest concern with the Boulevard (and even the Diplomat) was that the deep side wings that cushion the child's head would block my child's view and in turn make her cranky. But, my concerns went out the window when I read what they do: "The Britax Boulevard car seat features True Side Impact Protection™ with deep side walls and head support to provide advanced protection in side impact collisions." And I'm even happier to report that my child doesn't mind them one bit. She simply leans a bit farther forward to see around them!

Strollometer: Pick up the pace

Strollometer_2 So you're a new mom, struggling to come to terms with your postpartum body, but you don't have the time or energy to brush your teeth -- let alone hit the gym.  Your main source of exercise has become daily walks with the baby, but its hard to feel like you're really accomplishing much of anything as you stroll aimlessly around the neighborhood.  Sound familiar?

The good news is that all that strolling really does work, over time.  And the even better news is that there's a device available that will motivate you to pick up the pace, to go the distance, to turn those leisurely walks into a full-blown, sweat-inducing workout...The Strollometer!  This nifty little award-winning wireless pedometer allows you to keep track of how far, how fast and how long you've strolled -- all with ease.

Bows2Cute: Clips to stick to!

By Guest Reviewer: Kara

Img_5596 My seven-month old baby girl is hair challenged, aka bald. I personally don't mind, except for the "What a cute boy" comments. Even dressed in pink dresses, we still receive boy references. So you can only imagine how excited we were to try hair accessories from Bows2Cute. Being a skeptic of infant hair accessories, I was blown away by Bows2Cute. They specialize in "bows for fine, thin or barely there hair".  I was impressed by the quality, variety and customization of these hair accessories.

Each bow is handmade -- the loops are tight, even and firmly secured to the clips.  They offer such a variety of snappies, headbands and bow styles. The bows offered are mini bows, animal bows, fruit bows, holiday bows and much more. I particularly liked the lovebug and butterfly clips. Every purchase is a customized order. For most bows, you can select from over 60 solid and 50 striped or polka dotted ribbons. You may also select from 6 different clip/hair band options - baby no-slip 1/5", no-slip 1.75, snappie, alligator clip, french clip and pony -o.

The No-Slip clips are Bows2Cute's most popular clip.  The No-Slip clips are lined with felt and available in two sizes (1.5 " and 1.75").  They really do fit snugly with just a few  strands of hair. The alligator clip is recommended for thicker hair, but it stayed on my little girl's bald head. How could I not love that!

Medela Freestyle Double Electric Breastpump: Hands-free pumping!

Medelafreestyle_2

A few weeks ago, I met with some Medela PR folks about their new Freestyle® breastpump — the industry’s first hands-free, double-electric, rechargeable breastpump. I was extremely excited about the prospect of the mobility allowed by a hands-free pump and couldn't wait to test it out. Only problem is, I'm no longer nursing nor will I be anytime soon. I had little trouble finding some willing testers, my neighbors Betty and Marie. Both have previously used Medela's Pump in Style breastpumps so they had something to compare it with. Betty is nursing her third child and Marie has been exclusively pumping for her daughter for the past ten months.

Vicks V790 GermFree Humidifier: Helping everyone breath easier

Vickshumidifier I hate cold season, and even though it's past us now, I feel the need to share a valuable find with you. The Vicks V790 GermFree Humidifier is one of the best humidifiers I've ever used, and I've used many. First of all it doesn't leak, and the double chamber water cannisters hold 2 gallons of water total. You can fill them individually and they operate for up to 24 hours straight with no problem.

Pondür: No need to ponder organic baby apparel

Pondur Pondür makes exceptional apparel for babies out of the finest 100% organic cotton and I can feel the difference. They also use low impact dyes and water-based inks. And, the designs they churn out with those inks and dyes are absolutely adorable. Take for instance the quotes you can choose from for each onesie or lap tee, "My footprints may be small but my dreams are big," "My possibilities are endless," "Take care of me…take care of the world" and "Who am I not to be?". What baby or toddler do you know who wouldn't look even cuter with one of these on?

Lap tees and onesies are both $23 and come in assorted colors to choose from. Pondür doesn't use tags in their products to help keep little necks from getting scratchy and they use all recycled materials for their packaging and hang tags. I love a brand that keeps you looking and feeling good! Shop at pondur.com.

Precious Necessities: Where want and need collide!

Preciousnecessities My little girl first met with a hair bow on the day of her birth, they stuck a little ribbon in her hair and I freaked out. There is ONE photo of her with it on her head before I made them remove it, and it's not a bad picture at all. She didn't experience the hair bow again until somewhere around 3-6 months. Then they had become a necessity, somehow I had given birth to a child with a head full of black hair that just kept getting longer  -- I was bald until I was 2, but I digress! Then I became obsessed with hair bows, buying them in mass quantities all the time. I needed them to match certain outfits and certain moods, then I was told about Precious Necessities.

Their Lil' and Precious Bits Hair Clips are every bit precious and for moms like me a definite necessity! There's just something adorable about my little girl with a Flower hair bow (with a Swarovski crystal) in her hair and on preppy days she looks the part with an argyle hair bow. Best of all every item is hand-crafted by Natalie and her husband Chet just for you! You can order your hair clips at PreciousNecessities.com today.

Jumping Jacks: Go the extra mile

Sprint When a company has been doing something, the same something, for more than 60 years -- successfully -- you know that they must be doing that 'something' right.  In the case of Jumping Jacks, which began selling children's shoes in 1947, the adage is true.  With a company philosophy of always going the "extra mile," Jumping Jacks makes shoes of such high quality that your little one can log some serious miles of their own over the course of their shoes' lifetime.  We recently tested two new styles from Jumping Jacks, and were thrilled with the results.
